5 Natural Ways to Get the Smell Out of Your Clothes

Gym Clothes? Kids in Sports? Smelly Work Clothes?

Natural ways to get the smell out of clothes

Many of us are finally recovering from the holidays and are ready to start living our best lives and going after 2019 goals.

Perhaps you are aiming to get back to the gym, eat healthier, spend more time outdoors, or make the switch to natural household and personal care products.

If you are starting a new workout regimen or your kids are returning to sports and physical activities, it’s likely that you are dealing with some seriously stinky laundry.

Here are five tips for getting the smell out of your gym clothes, sportswear, and sweat towels without bringing harsh chemicals or toxins into your home.

White Vinegar

White vinegar has dozens of uses around the house – from dying eggs to killing weeds to cleaning windows. It’s also amazing for removing odors, stains, and detergent buildup from clothes and towels, as well as refreshing your washing machine.

Use up to half a cup of white vinegar in your washing machine along with your Liquid Laundry Detergent or Laundry Powder to remove unpleasant smells.

It can also be added to the fabric softener dispenser of your machine or during the final rinse cycle and it will act as a natural fabric softener. Use Wool Dryer Balls in the dryer after washing laundry with white vinegar as another way to naturally soften fabrics.

Sunshine and Fresh Air

Scented by Mother Nature

It doesn’t get much more natural than this. Hanging clothes to dry outdoors can air them out and release odors, and sunlight is great for bleaching out tough stains.

This is great if you have kids at home, especially, as food, mud, and grass stains seem to end up on every piece of clothing they wear. Be careful, though – sunlight can also fade colors with extended exposure or break down synthetic materials.

Molly’s Suds All Sport Laundry Wash

All Sport Wash

Our All Sport Laundry Wash eliminates tough odor-causing bacteria in performance wear through the use of “colloidal micelles”, which creates an energy field of safe cleaning power that penetrates and breaks up oil and dirt molecules into soluble components.

It can be used as a stain remover, as well, by rubbing directly into the fabric with a Laundry Stain Brush or when diluted with water 1:1 in a spray bottle. It is non-toxic and contains no harsh chemicals or synthetic fragrances, making it the perfect versatile, natural laundry product for the whole family.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is another common household ingredient that has a myriad of uses and can work wonders on odors that linger even after washing. Sprinkle up to half a cup of baking soda into your washing machine with clothes or towels to help eliminate odors.

For extra persistent smells, soak clothing in a baking soda and water mixture before washing, or place dry clothing in a sealed bag along with baking soda and leave for a day or two to allow the baking soda to absorb the odors.

The Freezer

This may sound strange, but it works. Dry clothing can be placed in the freezer where the cold temperatures will kill bacteria that cause odors without wearing down the fabric or fading colors as repeated washing can do.

This method works great for preserving the color and fabric of dark jeans as well as preventing mildew and smell in your sweaty workout wear, which can preserve the life of your clothing.
